The Chalk Hill Estate Culinary Garden provides a bounty of produce, some for the personal use of the Furth family, but the bulk of the daily harvest is transformed into of-the-moment, wine-friendly creations by Chef Didier Ageorges. The garden features antique specimens and heirloom cultivars, all grown with 100% organic farming principles. In the manner of Sarah Rich Latimer, the pioneer farmer at Chalk Hill, this organic garden has a brood of hens that provide daily clutches of eggs (as well as freely ranging to help rid the garden of "tasty" pests by scratching for slugs and grubs). Beehives assist with pollination and provide occasional tastes of site-specific, Chalk Hill honey.
The garden regularly provides a gift to children suffering from anemia in the form of specially grown, iron-rich produce. This program, administered by the local Our Lady of Guadalupe Church, is part of the Furth's ongoing philanthropy that also includes regular gifts to the Redwood Empire Food Bank.
Currently, the renowned garden designer, Michael Bates, is planning a garden expansion that will not only add to the garden's production but also to its aesthetic beauty.
